Lesson 2
Invention and Fugue
- In an invention the points of limitation are at the octave only and it is a contrapuntal work most commonly written for two or three voices.
- In a fugue a bridge or link may be used to connect entries of the subject and answer in the exposition and the points of limitation are at the level of the dominant or at the octave, depending on whether the entrance is the answer or the subject.
- A real answer is the second entry in a fugue in which the subject is transposed exactly, with no changes in the sizes of intervals.
- Fortspinnung is passages characterised by by continuous motion, unequal phrase lengths, sequences, and elided phrases
