Lesson 1

 Binary and Ternary Forms

  • Often found in Baroque and Classical dance suites, binary form is one of the most common musical forms that are made up of two sections, often repeated.
  • It is known as rounded binary because it is necessary to return to the A section to conclude the piece when the second section of a binary piece ends on the V chord.
  • A continuous binary piece is one where the first section ends on a cadence other than tonic.
  • Often, the B section in a ternary form is longer than the B section of a rounded binary form.
  • A ternary piece can have a B section that contrasts with the A section in terms of key, motives, and texture .
