Lesson 4

 Diatonic Sequence

  • A sequence is a musical idea shown, that same idea is repeated right after the first musical idea with the difference in pitch either up or down.
  • The change in sequence has to have the same interval size.
  • Sequences give the tonic area more room and make it longer.
  • Sequences create an easy transition from one key to the next.
  • Descending fifth sequence is when the sequences is transposed by descending fifths. In the upper voice they line up with the chords as I-IV, vii0-iii, vi-ii, V-I.

This video explains what a diatonic sequence is and what a chromatic sequence is, it also goes into detail about descending fifths, ascending fifths and the pachelbel sequence.
This video explains how we can spot a diatonic sequence in a piece of music.
Me playing these sequences in a piece called Romance in Eb
