 Phrases and Motives

  • A motive is the smallest music idea in a piece of music.
  • There are 5 different ways to move a motive, fragmented, transposed, extended, truncated and inverted.
  • The place where the ending sounds less closing is called the antecedent.
  • The place where the ending sounds closed is called the consequent.
  • When inverting or changing a motive you must change the interval in direction but never change teh interval's size
